Coachella attendees make the case for why Weekend 2 is more enjoyable. (Hint: Fewer celebs, more "regular people.")

One year after the death of a pop icon, Coachella is back to looking to the future.

The Empire Polo Club, which last year became
a purple-lit shrine to Prince, the artist who in 2008 dazzled Coachella with his performance of Radiohead’s Creep, is again the site of America’s first major music festival, which really launched the summer festival season with a Friday night of music headlined by Radiohead.

“Weekend two,” shouted Glass Animals frontman Dave Bayley on the big Coachella stage just before sunset. “The good weekend! That’s what I hear. The weekend where everybody takes too many drugs!”

THE LATEST: Coachella Weekend 2 live coverage

There’s been an annual debate since Coachella went to two weekends in 2012 about whether the first or second weekend is best to attend the festival that is called by the industry watchdog, Pollstar, the premier outdoor music event since its launch in 1999. That debate won’t be settled this weekend.

Leo Zaldivar of Baldwin Park, attending his first Coachella, said he chose to come on the second weekend because of the vibe he'd heard about.

“The first weekend, there are more celebrities,” he said. “The second weekend, it’s more packed with regular people like us.”
